What Are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are a safe and effective solution for replacing missing teeth. It is basically a replacement tooth. The new implant can act as a support to crowns, bridges or to secure a denture.

Dental implant treatment normally has two stages. First the titanium implant is gently threaded in the existing bone of the jaw (where the existing root used to be). Then, when osseointegration has occurred, (this is where the bone will attach itself to the dental implant) typically 3-4 months, replacement teeth are attached to the implant. In some situations, it is possible for temporary teeth to be attached to an implant at the time of fitting.

Dental implants are a very popular treatment and are the most natural solution for tooth loss, both aesthetically and functionally.

Implants can be prone to a type of gum disease (‘peri-implantitis’) which results in loss of bone around implants making them loose. The aftercare of implants is very important and regular 3 monthly visits to the hygienist is normally advised to keep the gums and bone healthy.
